The Treasury has been challenged to explain an alleged secret dossier at the heart of the Lloyds takeover of Halifax Bank of Scotland.The call came from Liberal Democrat deputy leader Vince Cable, who has tabled a parliamentary question asking if the dossier still exists, and if its contents can now be revealed.

HBOS SHAREHOLDERS overwhelmingly approved the bank's controversial takeover by rival Lloyds TSB and an £11.5 billion funding boost from the taxpayer.
Based on votes cast before the meeting, the moves were supported by an 84% majority of individual shareholders, and 98% by the value of shares voted.

Workers have been told to axe festive parties they've booked in the bank's name for fear of a public backlash. And HBOS chiefs - getting £11.5billion in Government bailout money - have pledged to make it up to them by giving workers hard cash to cover non-refundable deposits. The bank had earlier axed departmental events as fears mounted about negative publicity. But now even knees-ups for branch staff paid for out their own pockets have been axed. One Lanarkshire branch was forced to cancel two tables booked in the function suite at Airdrie United's Excelsior Stadium. And staff at an Edinburgh branch were forced to pull out of a bash at a Hilton hotel in the city. A source said: "Individual branch bosses have been told there are to be no office dos in the HBOS name. "But many parties were booked up months ago and deposits paid in advance. The bank has said staff will get that money back." Staff fury has spilled over into internet message boards. One worker said: "It's disgusting. I feel wholly stabbed in the back. "We do not earn big salaries and even bigger bonuses, nor are we the ones to blame for bringing the bank to its knees." An HBOS spokesman refused to discuss the party ban, but said: "Like many other companies, we are taking a very sensible and prudent approach with regards to Christmas-related events."
